7 Rules for Video Editing

When editing a video I think it's important to follow the "7 rules of cutting" created by Edward Dmytryk, a great American film director.

Rule #1: Never make a cut without a positive reason
- you should only make a cut if it will improve the scene

Rule #2: When undecided about the exact frame to cut on, cut long rather than short
-having too much footage is much better than not having enough

Rule #3: Whenever possible, cut in movement
-this helps create smooth, seamless cuts between scenes

Rule #4: The fresh is preferable to the stale
- a poorly managed cut can confuse or bore your audience

Rule #5: All scenes should begin and end with continuing action
-this allows a steady pace and keeps the viewer's interested

Rule #6: Cut for proper values rather than for proper matches
- you should focus mainly on matching the emotion of the scene

Rule #7: Substance first- then form
- technical skill means nothing if a film has no substance

Justin Padilla- Tips for Auditioning

Important things to remember when auditioning-

Always Come Prepared!!
-Even if its not mentioned in the casting call ALWAYS bring your resume and headshot!
-Always bring extra copies along with you!!

Be Dressed to Impress!!
-Casual is fine but make sure it's appropriate
-Try to reflect your personality in what you wear
-If age appropriate, make-up and hair should be done but not over the top

Don't Let Your Nerves Get in the Way!!
-You don't have to be perfect, so the more relaxed you are the more your personality will show
-Being really nervous can cause you to rush through your lines, so just relax and try to stay at a steady pace

Audition as often as possible because you never know what they may be looking for!!!
